Candle of Hope Ceremony
At 10pm the most poignant and emotional part of the whole weekend take place.
This is the part of Relay For Life that really brings home the true meaning of the event; it is a chance for us all to remember those that have been lost to cancer and to celebrate the lives of those that have survived. For team members on the track at the time of Candle of Hope, the decision to continue or to stop is individual and either is totally acceptable.
During Candle of Hope, we ask that all mobiles are switched to silent or off completely and that everyone is respectful of the occasion.
All the candle bags are collected throughout the day are lit and placed as the centre piece at the foot of the grandstand. The bags have been deocrated by friends, family and colleagues who have lost a loved one or as a recognition of those who've survived.
Boards spelling out “Hope” are lit during the ceremony. Throughout the night, it will change to light the word “Cure”.
The ceremony ends with all participants taking to the track in a candlelit lap.
