What makes Portsmouth Relay so special and what to expect
To be honest its not easy to put into words, you absolutely have to do it to understand it.
....But we'll try,
....But we'll try,
On the day of the Relay event you can expect a lively mix of music, games, entertainment, food, fundraising – and perhaps a few surprises! Throughout the event, lots of fun activities take place and help to create a carnival atmosphere.
Although every Relay is unique, there are key elements that can be found in all Relay events across the world: Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Survivors Lap of Honour and Candle of Hope.

Imagine once a year gathering together with your friends, family or work mates to join in with 100s of other like minded people, some of whom have been Relaying for many years, to celebrate life, to remember loved ones and to raise money to help fight cancer. All that we ask is that one member of the team remains on the track at all times.
Portsmouth Relay for Life starts at noon on Saturday and finishes at noon on Sunday. Teams should be between 8-15 people of any age. You can register as many teams as you like. Each team is allocated a location within the inside of the running track in order for you to pitch your tents. We request that each team stays within the marked locations. Team pitch locations will be advised nearer the date and captains will be advised what time team members will be able to arrive at the Mountbatten Centre.
In between the ceremonies, we want you to enjoy yourselves, have fun and soak up the atmosphere of this wonderful and memorable event! Here at Portsmouth Relay, throughout the day, teams are invited to compete in sports tournaments such as netball, football, tug of war and sack races. Themed laps are also staggered throughout the weekend with past years having featured egg and spoon, bra and knickers and three legged races.
On Saturday, the stage is host to a variety of music guests for you to dance the afternoon away to! Don’t worry if you feel you might miss out on anything, our commentator will announce when the events will take place so you and your teams can take full advantage and make it a weekend to remember and enjoy. Teams are encouraged to dress up and/or decorate their tents or props. There is a trophy for the best dressed team and this is always fiercely contested! Teams are provided with a photo opportunity before the start of the Relay.
In 2011 a young couple booked the bar and function room at Mountbatten Centre for their wedding reception; when they were asked by Relay for Life if they would mind pausing their celebrations at 10 pm for the candle of hope ceremony, not only did they agree but offered to walk a lap in support of the event in the afternoon, so do people do this for Relay for Life or does Relay for Life do this for people?
